If you are in financial hardship and you have taken your maximum entitlement of student loan, you may be eligible for help through the Access to Learning Fund (ALF). This is a discretionary fund from the government to help those with additional financial need.
Applications will be considered throughout the academic year, and you will hear in writing within four weeks of applying. Students in an emergency situation should contact the relevant Student Welfare Officer who has access to this fund on a discretionary basis. To receive an emergency payment you will have to complete a standard application and the payment will usually be made as a loan until your standard application is assessed.
Part-time undergraduate students who are receiving fee support from their LA may apply for assistance with tuition fees. Postgraduate students can apply for ALF but must show that they have made adequate provision to fund their course.
To apply for the Access to Learning Fund you will need to download and read the guidance notes carefully. Make sure you complete the application form with care and enclose all relevant documentation, it may be the difference between receiving funding or not. The application form and guidance notes are available online or from your Student Welfare Officer.
