How do I access online resources?

The University subscribes to a large number of online resources (databases, electronic journals, electronic books) for your use. To use these “for free” you must identify (authenticate) yourself as being part of Roehampton University.

On campus – many of these resources allow you access without logging on.

Off campus (and a small number of resources on campus) - you will need to login to the resource using one of two authentication systems – Shibboleth (also known as institutional login) or Athens. See below for instructions on using these systems.

Most resources are now available via the Shibboleth system, however a small number are only available through Athens.  We recommend you try Shibboleth in the first instance.

For a small number of resources we have been unable to organise access through Shibboleth or Athens – you will need to obtain a specific username and passwords by contacting the Enquiry desk or through Virtual Librarian.

FAQs

How do I tell if I need to login?

You will need to login if:

  • You are off campus
  • You are prompted to login
  • There are no pdf (full text) or html (full text) links present
  • Links to “check for full text” are present
  • If you click on a pdf/html full text link and it says you don’t have access or asks you to pay
  • Symbol on records may indicate they are not full text (e.g. white squares in ScienceDirect)

Shibboleth - where do I log in?

  • DON’T fill in any login boxes: these are for personal subscribers
  • Look for a link e.g. Shibboleth Login, Institutional Login, Academic Login, Login via your institutionIf you don’t see one:
  • Look for Login link (may then take you to Shibboleth Login link etc)
  • Link may be anywhere/any size on webpage (eg top right hand corner)

Shibboleth – why do things look different?

  • The login dialogue varies with software platform and may not include all steps (identifying region/selecting Roehampton/logging in) e.g. you may be taken straight to logging in
  • Previous browsing history may affect the dialogue e.g. it may remember you are Roehampton or even your username and password
  • Deleting your browsing history will reset your computer
