Childcare

Nurseries

While the University is not able to offer advice about places available in nurseries, nor about their suitability, parents seeking childcare may wish to consult the local borough council websites for lists of nurseries:

The nearest nursery to the University campus is Eastwood Day Nursery and Creche on Roehampton Lane which has links with projects such as Forest School. A new day-care nursery, the Chapel Street Family Hub on Alton Road, adopts a Froebelian approach and has nursery practitioners who have a good understanding of the needs of student parents. Chapel Street offers a student discount on childcare fees.

The University may also be able to offer financial assistance to students with children in nurseries.

Childminding services

Check the following borough council websites for lists of childminders in the area:

The University cannot take any responsibility for the reputation and quality of these services.

Undergraduate students who are studying to be teachers here at the University often seek work with children to supplement the cost of their studies. They are all CRB-checked and sometimes advertise for work on the StudentZone website or around Froebel College.

Advice for student parents

Useful advice for student parents can be found on the studentparents.org website.

Bringing children on campus

Children and young people under 18 are welcome on campus. However to ensure their safety, parents and guardians should note the following:

  • While they are on campus they are at all times the responsibility of their parent or guardian and should not be left unsupervised.
  • Some parts of the University are not safe for children, including workshops and outdoor spaces such as lakes and ponds. Children are not permitted in laboratories.
  • Children and young people under 18 are welcome in the Library so long as noise zones are respected.
  • Children should generally not attend lectures unless a specific arrangement has been made in advance with the lecturer.

Parents should also be aware that it may be necessary for a risk assessment to be carried out. For advice on when this may be required, please contact Graham Courtney, Health and Safety Manager, at g.courtney@roehampton.ac.uk or on

0208 392 5029.
