LOCATION: The modules in this programme are taught at the Roehampton Lane (Southlands College) campus unless otherwise stated.
PROGRAMME OUTLINE: International business is a field that is increasingly gaining interest for undergraduate study. The increasing globalisation of the world economy, increases in world trade, the accession of many eastern European countries to the European Union coupled with dramatic growth in the industrialisation of China, India and Russia all mean that there is increasing demand for graduates who can operate in global and increasingly diverse multi-cultural contexts.
The programme will produce graduates that have a good understanding of business and management in an international context. Organisations increasingly have to respond to the challenges of globalisation and operate in a largely global market place and economy, where challenges can come from overseas competitors rather than local corporations. Graduates from this programme with a good knowledge of international business will be in a competitive position in the graduate employment market.
AIMS: This programme aims to:
- have a critical understanding of global and international conceptions of business and management;
- develop the ability to apply and evaluate a range of approaches, conceptual frameworks and diagnostic tools to international business and cross cultural management;
- have developed skills of cultural sensitivity and an awareness of challenges in international business and management practice;
- have an advanced knowledge and ability to apply a range of methods appropriate to international business research;
- be able to use quantitative and qualitative frames of analysis in assessing international business operations and practices;
- be able to produce an international business report that conforms to standards of practice in western based organisations;
- have developed a range of interpersonal skills appropriate to operating in an international context;
- have developed their proficiency in a second language so that they are able to engage in business discussions in a second language.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: These are grouped into four categories:
Knowledge and Understanding
Students who successfully complete the programme will:
- be able to apply and integrate financial, quantitative, economic, psychological and sociological frameworks to the context of current international business practice;
- have an understanding and knowledge of relevant theoretical and conceptual frameworks of international business practice and management;
- be aware of the effects of contextual forces on, and the dynamics within, international organisations;
- have an understanding of a range of research techniques, both qualitative and quantitative;
- be able to work with current research based knowledge in international business and management practice;
- have extended knowledge and understanding of international business practice in relation to their chosen optional areas of study;
- be aware of the implications of, relevant professional, legal and ethical issues related to international organisations.
Cognitive SkillsStudents who successfully complete this programme will be able to:
- evaluate and apply models, concepts and theories relevant to the operation and practice of international business;
- evaluate and apply qualitative and quantitative research methods to exploring challenges and practice in international business;
- analyse data and evaluate information from a range of sources;
- review strategies, policies and practices in the light of changing circumstances within a global context;
- undertake detailed analysis and demonstrate an awareness of problem solving techniques in relation to international business problems.
Practical SkillsStudents who successfully complete this programme will be able to:
- select and analyse primary and secondary data to address an appropriate international business problem;
- be able to recognise, select and apply ethical values and problems to situations and decisions in an international context;
- be able to demonstrate the ability to apply skills of cultural sensitivity in relation to international business practice.
Key SkillsStudents who successfully complete this programme will be:
- able to use communication and information technology to analyse data and make high quality and accessible presentations to an international audience;
- able to engage in business and professional discourse in both oral and written communication in two languages;
- able to work effectively in a multicultural group, for example as a leader selecting appropriate leadership styles, setting targets, motivating and monitoring;
- an independent learner with good time management skills;
- sensitive to diversity in people in national and international organisational cultural contexts.
PROGRAMME REGULATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Students enrolled on the
BSc International Business will be taught and assessed in accordance with the
University's Taught Degree Regulations.
Home students who commence the programme in year one will be required to spend the second term of their second year at an overseas partner institution. They will be required to take a programme of studies at the overseas partner institution studying the equivalent of 60 HE2 level credits. These students will agree their overseas study programme with the Programme Convener. Students will be required to demonstrate to the Programme Convener they are capable of studying abroad successfully and are worthy ambassadors of Roehampton University. Students are normally required to pass all year one modules on the first attempt obtaining a pass mark of at least 50%.
Students studying at a partner institution will normally be taught and assessed in English and, where appropriate, be encouraged to continue their language development skills in a second language. The grades from these credits will not count towards the degree classification owing to difficulties in ensuring equity between marking schemes with international partners. The students will, however, be required to pass these modules to ensure that they have enough general credits to be awarded a degree. Degree classifications for
Home students on the programme will be calculated from either their average of 180 credits at levels HE2 and HE3 (of which at least 120 must be at level HE3) or from their average of 120 credits at level HE3.
International students may study overseas for the second term, although this is not a programme requirement. Where international students elect to study overseas for their second term the above regulations will apply.
The programme has been specifically designed to allow entry to students with appropriate prior qualifications directly in to the final year. This will include students who have completed an HND in a business related field and students at overseas partner institutions where a formal
Memorandum of Agreement and
articulation agreement have been agreed.
Students may enter the programme at year one, two or three depending on their previous qualifications. Students who are accepted into final year entry of the
BSc International Business from approved overseas partners will receive double awards, in line with agreements outlined in the formal
Memoranda of Agreement. Degree classification for final year entry students will be based on their average across 120 credits at level HE3.
Other students may be considered for direct entry to the final year or year two of the programme and will be processed in line with the University procedures for
CATS Transfer.
Students are normally required to pass all elements of assessment in core modules. Resit opportunities are allowed in line with University Regulations and provided the student has made a serious attempt at an assessment. A serious attempt is defined as a minimum of 20% at the first attempt and two thirds attendance at classes.
